Which SAFe® course is right for me?

With the massive interest in Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe®) and the related SAFe Courses, we’re getting a lot of inquiry regarding the route we recommend for aspiring SAFe® change agents.

In this article we create a mapping of the various routes one can take to become certified, and what the career path has in hold for people on the SAFe® journey already.

One of the biggest principles in SAFe is the belief that leaders and managers should be trained in the framework to ensure success before the organisation embarks on the journey of scaling Agile. To this extent, the Leading SAFe course is recommended for this purpose.

Leading SAFe Course

This SAFe Agilist certification equips the organisation with the first layer of preparation change agents to drive the organisation change. This two-day Leading SAFe course teaches the Lean-Agile principles and practices of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). You will learn how to execute and release value through Agile Release Trains, how to build an Agile Portfolio, and how to lead a Lean-Agile transformation at enterprise scale. will gain an understanding of the Lean-Agile mindset and how to apply the principles and practices of SAFe to support Agile teams, programs, program portfolio management, and to coordinate large Value Streams.

Attending the class prepares you to take the exam and become a certified SAFe Agilist (SA).

Team Members (so everyone)

For people totally new to SAFe® we recommend that teams, with their management, starts with the SAFe® Practitioner course (formerly known as SAFe® for Teams).

Build the skills needed to become a high-performing team member of an Agile Release Train (ART)—and learn how to collaborate effectively with other teams—by becoming a SAFe® 4 Practitioner (SP). During this two-day course, attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of the ART, how it delivers value, and what they can do to effectively perform their role using Scrum, Kanban, and XP.

They will also learn how to write stories and break down features, plan and execute iterations, and plan Program Increments. Finally, they’ll learn about the continuous delivery pipeline and DevOps culture, how to effectively integrate with other teams in the program, and what it takes to continuously improve the train.

To facilitate the process, we naturally need gatekeepers to ensure we are delivering on the commitments we made at Program Increment Planning (PI Planning). Hence the focus of our next role is Scrum Master.

SAFe® Scrum Master (SSM)

In this two-day SAFe Scrum Master course, you’ll gain an understanding of  the role of Scrum Master in a SAFe enterprise. Unlike traditional Scrum Master training that focuses on the fundamentals of team-level Scrum, the SAFe 4.0 Scrum Master course explores the role of Scrum in the context of the entire enterprise, and prepares you to successfully plan and execute the Program Increment (PI), the primary enabler of alignment throughout all levels of a SAFe organization.

This includes learning the key components of scaled Agile development, how Scrum is facilitated throughout the enterprise, and how to execute iteration planning. You’ll also discover how to build high performing Agile teams by becoming a servant leader and coach, and how to coach those teams to deliver the maximum business value that is achievable through SAFe. The SSM certification signifies that you are prepared to perform the role of Scrum Master in a SAFe environment, increasing your value to teams and organizations that are implementing SAFe.

Scrum Masters are afforded the opportunity to take their careers to the next level with the SAFe Advanced scrum Master course, up next.

SAFe® Advanced Scrum Master course (SASM)

Ideally suited for SAFe Scrum Masters that have been practicing for a year or two, the SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM) course takes regular Scrum Mastering to Scrum Mastery.

This two-day course prepares current Scrum Masters for their leadership role in facilitating Agile team, program, and enterprise success in a SAFe® implementation. The course covers facilitation of cross-team interactions in support of the program execution and relentless improvement. It enhances the Scrum paradigm with an introduction to scalable engineering and DevOps practices; the application of Kanban to facilitate the flow of value; and supporting interactions with architects, product management, and other critical stakeholders in the larger program and enterprise contexts. The course offers actionable tools for building high-performing teams and explores practical ways of addressing Agile and Scrum anti-patterns in the enterprise.

It is worth noting that any entry level Scrum master such as PSMI or CSM would suffice as prerequisite qualification.

Now that our delivery teams are ready and amped to pump out production ready solutions, we now need Product Owners and or Managers in order to drive investment themes in the organization.

SAFe® Product Manager/ Owner (PMPO)

The SAFe Product Manager/ Owner has a pivotal role to play in the prioritisation of the most valuable initiative to reach the strategic objectives of the organization.

This two-day SAFe Product Owner interactive workshop begins with the principles of SAFe, Lean-thinking tools, Agile development practices at scale, and an overview of the Scaled Agile Framework.

Teams will then learn the Product Manager and Product Owner roles in the enterprise, how to manage the enterprise backlog, delivering features, agile requirements, the events within SAFe, and finally, stakeholder management.

At the end of this workshop, attendees will have the tools and knowledge they need to write Epics, Features, and User Stories within the Scaled Agile Framework, and have a solid foundation on how to manage programs in the Lean-Agile Enterprise. An optional SAFe Product Manager/Product Owner certification is offered at the end of the class.

Attendees typically include executives, product managers, product owners, consultants, lean-agile leaders, and Agile change agents.

SAFe® Agile Release Train Engineer (ART)

Also known as the uber Scrum Master overseeing the rest of the Scrum Masters, this role is closely related to the program manager role in more traditional settings.
